Here's everything we know so far in one handy place!

Black Ops is coming out November 9th, 2010 for PS3, 360, and PC. Treyarch has said that unfortunately there isn't a public beta planned at this time.

The max rank of Black Ops (at least in this internal beta) is 50. No word on Prestige Mode.

There are dedicated servers, lean, and will be day 1 mod tools.

Dedis are rented, no mods allowed on Ranked play (official content only). Unranked play can have mods/custom maps, etc.

Max players for ranked play on dedicated servers according to GameServers is 18, unranked max is 24.

Black Ops will have cheat protection in the form of VAC again, meaning the game will be attached to Steam. No official word on if VAC bans from MW2 will prevent people from playing Black Ops and vice versa.

New game mode: Wager Match. Players bet their COD Points and play in one of 4 new game modes with the hope that they place top 3 and get more cash than they had before. Players who aren't top 3 don't get anything. These modes are further explained in the Wager Match vid linked below, and are intended for adrenaline junkies.

Players level up which unlocks the capability to buy things with COD Points, which is the "cash" you wager in Wager Matches. You can buy weapons, equipment, perks, killstreaks, and character customization options.

Players can also buy Contracts which are time limited challenges that you purchase with COD Points (CP). There are three categories of contracts -- Mercenaries, Operations, Specialist. Each are tied to certain play styles and in-game achievements.

Customization Options:
-Change the color of the reticle — red dot doesn’t have to be red or a dot.
-Emblem editor – images, layers, and a background. You change the scale, move, color, rotate, all that stuff. Create layers, then purchase the option with COD points to put it on your gun
-Can engrave words into guns.

Secondary weapons are exclusively pistols, crossbow, and launchers only. (Ballistic Knife is a pistol)

Equipment and Special Grenades are now separate.

Launchers - M72. RPG. Strela. China Lake.

Lethal Grenades - Tomahawk. Frag. Semtex.

Tactical Grenades - Willy Pete. Nova Gas. Flash Bang. Concussion. Decoy. Willy Pete is smoke.

Equipment - C4, Claymores, Tactical Insertion, Jammer (acts like Scrambler from MW2), Camera Spike, Nighting Gale (makes a fake red dot on the radar), Motion Sensor

Perks unless mentioned otherwise are currently similar to their MW2 counterparts.

Tier One Perks - Lightweight. Scavenger (doesn't refill Tactical Nades or Equipment). Ghost (Cold Blooded). Flak Jacket (can't be one hitted by explosives, slight juggernaut effect). Hardline.

Tier Two Perks - Hardened (no clue yet). Scout (Iron Lungs from COD4). Steady Aim (will have a different pro effect since Iron Lungs is in), Sleight of Hand, Warlord (Bling)

Tier Three Perks - Marathon. Ninja (no heart beat sensors, has the roll effect?). Second Chance (Treyarch's Last Stand, differences from IWs: if a guy on your team has this perk he can revive you, if you get gibbed by something VERY strong, you don't go into last stand, you just die). Hacker (Sit Rep). Tactical Mask (reduced effect of stuns/flashes on you).

Tier 1 Perks affect how your character looks, Ghost gives you a ghillie suit, Flak Jacket gives you body armor, etc.


This leads us to today’s announcement - Call of Duty: Black Ops will definitely have dedicated servers. That is, as long as you get them from gameservers.com. We can compare that with Henry Ford's legendary statements that customers can have a car in any color as long as it’s black. The gameservers.com statement goes,

"GAMESERVERS.COM SELECTED AS THE EXCLUSIVE DEDICATED SERVER PROVIDER FOR CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS. GameServers.com, in an exclusive contract with Activision and Treyarch studios, announces that they will offer dedicated server rentals for the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops release scheduled for November 9, 2010. We are extremely excited about this unprecedented relationship with Activision to offer dedicated servers exclusively for Black Ops”, says David Aninowsky, CEO of GameServers.com. “We are placing a great amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure that we exceed any and all expectations."

What does this mean? It basically boils down to Activision Blizzard, Inc. still wanting control over what kind of content is played on the servers and not allowing the development community to do as they please. For gamers, this means that there won’t likely be many if any mods much like MW2. The exception, though, is that there could be a possibility for a competition mode of the game, but that’s still, of first, last and only resort.
GameServers.com effectively have a monopoly on COD: Black Ops server hosting. They also have limited the ranked multi-player to 18 slots just like MW2. If in theory want to have more, you can pay for an unranked server for $.99 per player per month.

So, for those of you that thought that Treyarch and their announcement of dedicated servers would bring back life to the COD franchise, Activision appears to have made sure that they limited it to the point of not really being dedicated anymore. This appears to be yet another game that has been ruined by the narrow mindedness of management that only wants to see margins and deliver dates rather than a good game. This, in the end, will hurt Activision greatly as they are effectively killing off a franchise on a platform that it originally started on. Interestingly though, it looks like Activision Blizzard is desperate to repeat the curious case of Electronic Arts and their fall from grace.

If MW2 didn’t leave a bad taste in gamers’ mouths, there’s a good chance that the way Activision is handling Black Ops may.
